Birth Control - Contraceptive Ring (NuvaRing)

Birth Control - Contraceptive Ring (NuvaRing)

Contraceptive Ring (NuvaRing) - a prescription plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina, where it releases both estrogen and progestin. The exact location of the ring in the vagina is not important as it releases hormones regardless. As it combines two hormones its function is similar to the combined pill but side effects also include vaginal irritations.

The ring remains in the vagina for 3 weeks and is then removed for 1 week before a new ring is inserted. If the ring is prematurely removed from the vagina and is not replaced within 3 hours another type of contraception is necessary to prevent pregnancy. The ring does not prevent the transmission of STD's and is as effective as the combined pill in preventing pregnancy.
