Birth Control - Mini Pill

Birth Control - Mini Pill

Mini pill - an oral contraceptive that only contains the hormone progestin, no estrogen. This pill is effective in preventing pregnancy, between 90-99% effective, but not quite as effective as the combined hormone pill. It is an appropriate contraceptive method for women who do not want to ingest estrogen, such as women who are breastfeeding.

Side effects are generally milder than those experienced by the combined pill. Like the combined pill, the mini pill must be taken regularly for 3 weeks with 1 week off and is only available by prescription.
