Sponge - a small disposable polyurethane device that is inserted into the vagina and releases spermicide for 12 hours. A sponge can easily be bought at pharmacies or other stores without a prescription. Intercourse can occur more than once but the sponge must be left in 6 hours after the last intercourse. It is 72-82% effective in preventing pregnancy but does not protect against STD's.
The sponge should not be used during menstruation. Some women may be allergic to the spermicide in the sponge but most experience no related health concerns. If left in longer than 12 hours the sponge can however cause toxic shock syndrome.
